Out on your own

When you’re out and about on your own or even with friends, keeping safe should always be at the back of your mind. This is so that a fun situation does not turn into something hard to handle. It is important that you:

  • don’t go anywhere with strangers, stick with your friends until you know that you can trust them. Most strangers turn out to be nice people, but it is a good idea not to trust everyone that you meet right away
  • hold back from telling strangers too much personal information about you, your family and your friends

At night

If you’re out at night it is important that you:

  • stick to well lit up areas
  • avoid taking shortcuts down alleyways, footpaths or across fields
  • tell your parents or carers where you are going and when you expect to be home. Try to keep to agreed times so your parents/carers don’t worry unnecessarily
  • arrange to walk home with friends
  • are aware of your surroundings - It is better to keep your earphones off instead of listening to music so that you can hear and see what is going on around you
  • walk quickly and confidently to your destination

Think you’re being followed

Trust your feelings when you are walking in an unfamiliar neighbourhood. If you are worried that you are being followed, cross the street to see if the person does the same. Do not be afraid to start running if you need to - don't wait until the person is very close to you before you begin running. Go to the nearest shop, house, restaurant, busy or well-lit area.

Personal belongings

Don't fight with someone who tries to take your belongings. If an unfamiliar person grabs your purse or bag, just let go and do NOT struggle with them. If you fight, you risk getting hurt. Money and other belongings can be replaced - your safety is the most important thing. Run in the opposite direction of the person and go to the nearest house for help. Don't forget to use your voice. Yelling for help is a sure way of getting the attention of people around you. Try to:

  • only go out with the money that you need for that day
  • keep expensive items hidden such as iPods or a mobile phone
  • keep bags closed and keep the opening facing you
  • try to keep your phone separate from a bag so that you can easily find it
  • think about where you are leaving your jacket or bags
