What is an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)?

The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a weekly payment of up to £30 paid directly to you if you're aged 16 or 17 and stay on in further education. A £100 bonus is also available if you stick with your course and make good progress.  Bonuses are paid in January and July in the first year of study, and September, January and July after that.

Am I entitled to EMA?

Entitlement to EMA depends on an assessment of household income. If you are thinking of staying in further education and live in a household with an annual income of £30,810 or less, then you should apply.

Young people can apply for EMA while in custody without the need to submit evidence of financial income. If you are in custody, this will allow you to receive EMA on your release, when you enrol on a valid learning programme.

How much will I get?

The weekly allowance is paid at three levels - £10, £20 and £30, depending on household income. Young people from households with an income of £25,522 to £30,810 will receive the £10 weekly rate. If your family income level is between £20,817 and £25,521 you will receive £20 and households with an annual income of up to £20,817 will get the full £30 rate.

For how long will I receive their EMA?

Most young people will get their EMA for two years (as long as their household income does not rise above the £30,810 per annum threshold). The EMA will be available for three years for those who may need additional time in further education.

Students in Year 11

Students should be given an application pack from school. Connexions Centres will have a small supply as well.

How to apply

You can obtain an application form in three ways.

  • From school or college. There will be limited supplies and the young person should be encouraged to contact the helpline or register online.
  • By calling the EMA Helpline free on 0800 121 8989.
  • Through the EMA website

All payments will be made direct to your bank account.
