What is confidence?

If you are confident then you are free from doubt and have self-belief in your ability to accomplish something. Having self-belief can help you:

  • take pride in your work and abilities
  • relieve nervousness
  • succeed in your life challenges

A good example of where self-belief can relieve nervousness is during your driving test. Being confident that you have the learnt the necessary skills will help you overcome your nervousness or anxiety. Don’t forget your driving instructor has the confidence in your ability to pass or they would not encourage you to take your test.

Assurance

When someone has confidence in your abilities it gives you the self-belief to succeed. We all, from time-to-time, doubt our abilities however you can help raise a person’s confidence by reminding them of their:

  • skills
  • abilities
  • strengths
  • achievements

Worries

You might feel more confident in some aspects of your life and less in others. This might be:

  • when you encounter new people
  • when talking to your partner, in a relationship
  • when adapting to a new job or school, college and university

You possess all the tools necessary for your success. If you believe something negative about yourself, you may begin to act in a negative way in response to the message you are sending your brain. The same principle applies if you think positive.

Focus on the positives

It's a good idea to start by focusing on something that you are already good at. If you concentrate on what you know, it can help you in areas that you don't feel too confident about trying. This is helpful to remember when you approach a new challenge. The benefits of positive thinking will result in good feelings that help you gain confidence. When a person feels good, they are more likely to have a confident approach to a difficult situation.
