First aid is care given in an emergency to an injured person. Knowing some first aid can:
- minimise injury
- minimise future disability
- save somebody’s life
St John Ambulance has created First Aid audio files which can be downloaded to a portable MP3 player, computer or phone. The service offers advice on the steps someone should take if they come across an accident scene. The charity believes that everyone should learn at least the basic First Aid techniques. Knowing what to do can make the difference to a person's recovery, and even save their life.
Visitors to the St John Ambulance site can click on the titles for written First Aid advice or on the icons for spoken tips. Topics include:
- how to conduct a primary survey
- cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- the recovery position
- choking
- heart attacks and shock
- fractures
People at work can suffer injuries or falls and it is important that they receive immediate attention. The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require your workplace to provide adequate and appropriate facilities to enable first aid. At your induction to your workplace, which usually takes place within your first few days, make sure you know:
- where the nearest suitably stocked first aid kit is kept
- who the appointed person is to take charge of first aid arrangements
