The environment is what makes up our surroundings which include:
- the air we breathe
- plants, trees and grass
- animals, birds and buildings
- everything that surrounds us in fact!
We affect everything around us in a small or big way. Every day, we do something to change the natural world around us just by living and working in it.
We all need to do our bit for the environment by:
- cutting down our use of energy and raw materials
- reducing our pollution and waste
- protecting fragile natural habitats of animals and plants
Recycling your waste is a great way of saving energy and conserving the environment. For more information about recycling check out the following websites:
You can compost your vegetable peelings, grass and all manner of things in a composting bin, which can be used to enrich your garden. The Composting Association is a rich source of information on composting matters.
There are often bottle banks and recycling bins at the big supermarkets, usually in their car parks. These sites sometimes also take paper and textiles, so next time you're at your supermarket, keep your eye out for them. Some supermarkets charge you to use plastic bags in a bid to reduce the amount that we use, so consider re-using your plastic bags or purchasing a bag-for-life. The products we buy from supermarkets often have unnecessary packaging. Before buying consider biodegradable items, which decompose much faster.
You can do your bit for the environment and help others by taking your unwanted items like clothes, shoes, and books to a local or national charity shop in your area. Here are some of the charity shops you can take your unwanted items to:
- Cancer Research UK
- British Red Cross
- Oxfam
- Help the Aged
- Age Concern
Charity shops are also a great place to find some real bargains and even designer clothes at unbelievable prices!
Climate change or global warming is the change in our climate. Rising global temperatures will bring:
- changes in weather patterns
- rising sea levels
- increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather
Engine exhaust gasses are a big source of air pollution and greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Why not think about your transportation method before you plan any journey, remember cycling is more environmentally friendly and helps keep you fit and healthy!
