Animal welfare is an emotional subject because of the deep love that many of us feel for animals. Most animal rights activists are concerned with preventing cruelty to animals - but should we go further? Does ensuring animal welfare require providing for animal happiness as well?

RSPCA cruelty statistics released during July 2005 reveal a large rise in the number of animals not getting even the most basic care and attention such as access to adequate food, water and housing. Under current legislation, advice from the RSPCA inspectors can be ignored.

The RSPCA, along with other animal welfare organisations, vets and members of the public want to see the law changed so that when animals are being neglected their owner has a duty to rectify the problem.

A new Animal Welfare Act will help ensure that the seriousness of pet ownership is recognised and will make it an offence for owners not to provide for their pet's basic welfare needs.

Animal welfare goes beyond our pets and there are plenty of areas to explore, such as:-

  • animals used in farming
  • animals used in the fashion industry
  • animals used for entertainment

Ethical treatment of animals is a way of respecting animals and treating them in an ethical and acceptable way, regardless of whether they are a pet or a farm animal. You can find out more about animal welfare and animals rights from the websites shown here.
